Lights and Sounds.

hey ppl!

my life is relli boring ryte now... so i'll juz be reviewing some of the albums i've been listening 2.

today's album will be Lights and Sounds by Yellowcard.

the latest album released by yellowcard early this year, the band frm jacksonville florida, best known for their use of a violin in rock has released this album as a sign that they are now more mature. the tunes and lyrics in the cd are largely contrasting to their usual lover-boyish, reminiscent tunes frm ocean avenue. while the latter was a rather big hit with the title track, only one and way away it was not as impactful nor in line with current events. in fact, that album had mostly a punkish feel to it.

however, with the release of Lights and Sounds, yellowcard have delved into the genre of emotional rock. or emocore. it relli makes u sink into the song in a sense that it constantly refers to the listener in songs like lights and sounds. it starts of rather quietly with an opening piano track called three flights up. at the end of this first track though, it crunches into the fast-paced intro of it's title track. while referring to the listener during the song, it kinda tries 2 make u appreciate everything around u...

it later procedes 2 tell a story of a single person, whose name is not uncovered until later in the album. "down on my head" basically starts 2 tell the listener about this person's daily life. going about his daily routine until everything goes wrong. or rather having the "world coming down on [my] head".

"sure thing falling" is very sentimental to me, for reasons unknown. haha. but it basically starts introducing us to this character, and apparently, the first-person is trying to prevent something bad frm happenign to our character, by writing "books" to protect him from a terrible fate.

"city of devils" is next. i personally feel it is an anknowledgement of the corruption and evil in our society and y we, or in this case the central character has to live in it.it has a relli dark and moody feel to it, so much so dat he "can't see the sky here at night". it's more or less a depressing but true song.

"rough landing, holly" is very much a love song in it's own right. i mean, through all the explosive rock, u can still here the lyrics about how our character misses this loved one, holly, even in the midst of the war. and about how she is his courage and strength to carry on.

"two weeks from twenty" is largely a revelation for all of us, as we now know our main character's name. Jimmy. here we hear about his dreams, his ambitions and everything he wanted to be. as mentioned, he was one of those whom "they we sent with a gun." signing away his right to be proud, i feel, was referring to the enlistment form for the army. it has a really jazzy feel to it, with the inclusion of the sax, but it still manages to bring out a feeling of grief for this nineteen-year-old who died in a war.

"waiting game" is a very brink-of-death kinda song, where it seems that jimmy wants and needs to see holly one more time, u noe, the usual, deathbed scene thingy. but it's touching in that sense. the story, which has progressed up until here holds a very emotional feeling, which i feel, tries to make us sympathize with those lost in the war, many of whom had lives ahead of them, but sacrificed it.

"martin sheen or JFK" is rather confusing for me, mostly becos it seems to be speaking from more than one voice. on one hand, the authority seems to be stressing that he's taking all the soldiers, jimmy included and the latter appears to be protesting against fighting, but he has no choice, hence "i'll hurt for you". later on in the song, one whom i'd assume to be holly cries out in an empty bed, that jimmy is gone, and she can't live without him because "[he's][her] air". this is more or less a collection of all the character's thoughts at that point in time.

"grey", i can't relli tell hu's point of view it's being sung from, largely cos it kinda applies to everyone. it's relli a lot about confusion and how everythign seems to be in disarray. it also shows us that jimmy duzzen't regret his decision of going to war. in a sense, he's breaking up with holly in this song. and it's touching in a sense that he duzzent' want his death to affect her. *sniff**sniff*

"words, hands, hearts". it's after the war, and everyone is now looking back on how the war has changed them. it is now that it is explicitly revealed to us that what has happend is irreversible. and noone can do anything to change what has happened.

"how i go", the first relli cheerful song in the album. although it's talking mostly of how jimmy is given a resolution, and that he's not at all unhappy about dying, he encourages holly to cry it out, and to "let it flow". the mention of a son kinda gives the impression that perhaps holly was pregnant when jimmy died, and that jimmy is now talking in sprit to his son. maybe, maybe not. it's just an inference. but a very heartwarming song, nonetheless.

the last song in the album, "holly wood died", juz when u tot everything was fine and dandy, we see that maybe, holly and jimmy never lived such a perfect, peaceful suburban life. the mentioning of "coming down" kinda refers to hell. seriously. it also seem like he's trying to tempt her into dying, but maybe it's just me.

overall, lights and sounds is telling the story of one boy and one girl, who love each other so deeply, and yet are seperated by war and death. as well as all the trials and tribulation before and after the war. and about how society duzzen't relli give a shit.

the secret to life is to enjoy the pleasure of being terribly, terribly, deceived.-oscar wilde5:00 AM
